OPTIONAL MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE
The only independent two-year program in NYC with an MA option..
The New Actors Workshop and Antioch University McGregor have created an affiliation allowing students to earn a master’s degree while attending The Workshop. Prospective students must apply to both the MA program and The Workshop and enroll in both institutions. Students design a degree plan consisting of eight credits that are earned outside The Workshop during the summer with an academic or creative focus not covered by The Workshop curriculum - this includes a class, The Performing Artist, taught by Dr. Jon Saari through Antioch University McGregor. Many students choose history of theater, Shakespeare, modern drama, or creative writing courses but there is no limit to the possibilities. The ten-credit thesis is often an original performance piece written by the student and performed at The Workshop, but other options are available.
Adjunct faculty has included Richard Caliban, Eileen Connolly, Jane House, Ph.D., Mimi Lieber, Charles Marowitz, Judith Malina, Judy Lee Oliva, Marilyn Sokol, Lisa Sokolov and Ernest Thompson
CURRICULUM: The two-year training program of The New Actors Workshop serves as the core and principal component of the master of arts in acting degree program. Additional credits for independent learning and a performance and/or written thesis are required. These are individually tailored to the professional goals of each student, and are designed in consultation with mentor, Kathy Hendrickson, and the Antioch faculty advisor, Dr. Jon Saari. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or its equivalent from an institution outside the U.S., and must submit applications and be accepted by both Antioch and The Workshop. ON CAMPUS REQUIREMENT: Two visits to the Antioch campus are required: the intial orientation session at the start of the program and a weekend thesis seminar at the end of the second year. All other work is done at the Workshop in New York City and at additional learning sites chosen by the student. |
